HEARING SCREENING AT YOUR SCHOOL

Good hearing is of utmost importance for the development, progress and academic performance of a learner in school. It is for this reason that the early identification of hearing problems is so crucial. Some problems in the ears can commonly occur in younger children, often without the knowledge of the parents, for example:

• Fluid build-up behind the eardrum;
• Wax build-up in the ear canal;
• Hearing loss present from birth;
• Hearing loss due to infections and noise exposure.

It is critical to know that hearing loss occurs in different degrees of severity and it may often seem as if there is nothing wrong with your child’s hearing, while he/she may hear some sounds better than others.

Captain Hear’O visits schools to teach children about ear and hearing care through the use of songs and stage play. Because he is such a friendly character, children are very fond of him. This helps children remember and internalise the important lessons to be learnt. The audiologist, accompanying him does hearing screening tests and ensure that the children have super sonic hearing!

The hearing screening process consists of 4 different tests:

• Otoscopic Examination – Visually examine the ear canal and eardrum.
• Tympanometry – Middle ear test.
• Pure Tone Audiometry – Tests hearing with the use of beeping sounds at different pitches.
• Oto Acoustic Emissions – Testing of the hearing organ without the child having to respond on sound.

A report explaining your child’s results will be sent home.
